Somatic Experiencing online - Back To Your Body Somatic Therapy

Deep healing that starts with the body

Somatic Experiencing ® method is at the heart of our somatic therapy work.

We offer online Somatic Experiencing sessions to individuals and couples living in Asia or anywhere in the world.

Somatic Experiencing therapy might be right for you if you...

  • are experiencing the symptoms of chronic stress or trauma;
  • have tried any form of traditional or alternative therapy, but would like to include your body in your healing;
  • are looking for a gentle body-mind approach.

    What is Somatic Experiencing ®?

    Somatic Experiencing ® (SE) is a form of body-oriented or somatic therapy. It’s a gentle yet powerful trauma healing intervention based on the understanding of our nervous system and the physiology of trauma.

    Dr Peter Levine, who developed this somatic healing method, spent years studying stress on the animal nervous system. He realized that wild animals are constantly under threat of death yet show no trauma symptoms. And what he discovered was that trauma has to do with the survival response to perceived life threat. So if this response doesn’t complete, then that charge that is generated for our survival stays trapped in our bodies. And, from the body’s perspective, it is still under threat.

    The Somatic Experiencing ® method works on turning off our physiological threat alarm through a “body first” approach to healing.

    SE is effectively used to address the somatic component of both shock and developmental trauma. Some of the types of trauma include:

    What to expect from Somatic Experiencing therapy?

    Somatic Experiencing works with the nervous system primarily through the body. And this is how the magic and transformation happen in SE sessions. Sensing and noticing what is happening inside requires patience and sometimes courage. Also, at times, it may feel awkward and uncomfortable. So our job is to help you navigate whatever arises and gently guide you on this journey towards physical, emotional and relational healing and transformation.

    What happens in sessions?

    We usually start by using body awareness tools and exercises to help you settle, ground and find resources. As we proceed working through difficult emotions, sensations or situations in a very gradual and titrated way, we’ll keep revisiting these resources. This back-and-forth process in Somatic Experiencing is called pendulation – it follows the flow of the nervous system. So we’ll move between activation and settling to help you come out of the fixated state caused by stress or trauma.

    It’s a very organic and gentle process of working with whatever arises in the present moment. First, noticing it in your body and then allowing it to transform. But instead of diving right into the core of trauma, we’ll be approaching it from the periphery. The intention is to help you find a felt sense of safety and ease before we take a step deeper. Thus, building trust and resilience one step at a time.

    Inside one SE session - a client's process

    Every SE session is different. Sometimes we work directly with trauma, and other times the focus may be on everyday challenges like stress, clarity, or grounding. Here’s one client’s experience, in her own words:

    “At the beginning of my session, I was feeling lost. There were things to get to, tasks to tend to, and work to be done. Everything that I wanted to do seemed a bit out of reach.

    When Elena asked me what I would like to focus on today, the word clarity arose from my heart. As she guided me to tune into my body and notice what showed up, I noticed sadness. Then doubt. Then kindness, and a sense of relief.

    She asked me what my body wanted to do, and I felt like standing. Then I wanted to move backwards from the screen. As I was stepping backwards, I felt like I was leaving this hole that was sucking my energy. Instead, I could feel more of myself again…”

    An SE session often follows the same direction of starting with noticing, then gradually following the body’s cues towards greater regulation.

    However, the pace and direction of your sessions will be unique to you, guided by your body’s responses and your needs.

    What you might notice after sessions

    When SE meets Attachment Healing

    Somatic Experiencing ® is widely known for resolving trauma through completion of our biological defensive responses like fight, flight, or freeze, and for regulating overwhelming arousal. But it can also touch into the roots of attachment wounding.

    In our SE sessions, we integrate the understanding of modern attachment theory and other relational healing models. This allows us to work more deeply with attachment trauma – the early ruptures that occur when attuned connection with a caregiver is missing or lost.

    This combined approach not only helps with nervous system regulation through body-based techniques and co-regulating support, but also gently rebuilds the capacity to feel safe in relationships.

    Can Somatic Experiencing therapy be done online?

    Somatic Experiencing therapy online

    Yes. In most cases, Somatic Experiencing therapy can be effectively done online as we work with mindful awareness, movement, and dialogue to guide somatic exploration. Online sessions also offer the benefit of being in a comfortable environment without the need to travel long distances, thus being a more economical and safer option for many people.

    There are, of course, limitations. For instance, a practitioner will not be able to see your whole body and therefore will rely on you reporting on what is happening in the rest of your body during the session. Also, direct therapeutic touch is not possible in an online setting, however, it can be replaced by the self-directed touch of a client or the intentional touch of a practitioner.

    How long does this process take?

    We believe in long-term work as our nervous system takes time to rewire and repair, this process cannot be rushed. Therefore, we suggest to allow about 3-6 months to work through a specific issue which will include preparation, deeper processing, repair and integration. The duration will vary depending on the severity of your issue and symptoms and can be adjusted as we start working together.
