“Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence.”
Dr. Peter A. Levine
Our Somatic Experiencing (SE) sessions might be right for you if you...
- are experiencing the symptoms of chronic stress or trauma;
- have tried any form of traditional or alternative therapy, but would like to include your body in your healing;
- are looking for a gentle body-mind approach.
What is Somatic Experiencing ®?
Somatic Experiencing ® (SE) is a form of body-oriented therapy that works with the nervous system to gradually process and integrate the physiological effects of stress and trauma.
Dr Peter Levine, who developed this somatic healing method, spent years studying stress on the animal nervous system. He realized that wild animals are constantly under threat of death yet show no trauma symptoms. And what he discovered was that trauma has to do with the survival response to perceived life threat. So if this response doesn’t complete, then that charge that is generated for our survival stays trapped in our bodies. And, from the body’s perspective, it is still under threat.
The Somatic Experiencing ® method works by turning off this threat alarm through a “body first” approach to healing.
SE is effectively used to address the somatic component of both shock and developmental trauma. Some of the types of trauma include:
- physical and emotional abuse
- witnessing horror
- medical trauma
- car accidents
- falls
- near-drowning
- natural disasters
- generational and collective trauma
- attachment and developmental trauma.
What to expect from Somatic Experiencing sessions?
Somatic Experiencing works with your nervous system to help you safely process trauma primarily through gentle attention to your bodily sensations. And this is how the transformation becomes possible. Sensing and noticing what is happening inside requires patience and sometimes courage. Also, at times, it may feel awkward and uncomfortable. So our job is to help you navigate whatever arises and support you on this journey across physical, emotional and relational layers.
What is SE process like?
In SE sessions, we usually start by using body awareness tools and exercises to help you settle, ground and find resources. As we continue working through difficult memories, emotions or sensations in a very gradual and titrated way, we keep revisiting these resources. This back-and-forth movement in Somatic Experiencing is called pendulation – we move between activation and settling so your system can come out of the fixated state caused by stress or trauma.
It’s a very organic process of working with whatever arises in the present moment. First, noticing it in your body and then allowing it to transform. But instead of diving right into the core of trauma, we are approaching it from the periphery. The intention is to help you find a felt sense of safety and ease before we take a step deeper. Thus, building trust and resilience one step at a time.
You may also wish to tell your story, but you don’t have to. Somatic Experiencing is based on the idea that your body holds the memory of what happened to you, and in SE, we work with this implicit bodily memory.
Inside one SE session - a peek into the client's process
“At the beginning of my session, I was feeling lost. There were things to get to, tasks to tend to, and work to be done. Everything that I wanted to do seemed a bit out of reach…
…When Elena asked me what I would like to focus on today, the word “clarity” arose from my heart… As she guided me to tune into my body and notice what showed up, I noticed sadness. Then doubt. Then kindness, and a sense of relief….
…She asked me what my body wanted to do, and I felt like standing. So I moved slowly from sitting to standing, and I already felt a bit better. The heaviness was still there but it wasn’t just focused in the front of my body. I felt more balanced…”

An SE session often follows the same direction of starting with noticing, then gradually following the body’s cues.
However, the pace and direction of your sessions will be unique to you, guided by your body’s responses and your needs.
What you might notice after our sessions
- Calmer emotions – moments of less overwhelm and more ease
- Clearer boundaries – feeling more grounded in your interactions
- Less stuckness – a greater sense of flow and presence in daily life
- Connection to your body – increased awareness, energy, and vitality
- Changes in reactivity – more space and ease in how your system responds
- Physical shifts – areas of tension softening, sleep and rest beginning to improve
- Relational capacity – growing attunement and connection
Sometimes, it may take more than a few sessions to start noticing these changes. And other times, small shifts can show up right away.
When Somatic Experiencing meets Attachment Healing
Somatic Experiencing ® can also support the healing of attachment.
This method is widely known for resolving trauma through completion of our biological defensive responses, like fight, flight, or freeze, and for regulating overwhelming arousal. At the same time, it can also touch into the roots of attachment wounding.
In our SE sessions, we integrate the understanding of modern attachment theory and other relational healing models. This allows us to work more deeply with attachment trauma – the early ruptures that occur when attuned connection with a caregiver is missing or lost.
This combined somatic attachment therapy approach not only helps with nervous system regulation through body-based techniques and co-regulating support, but also creates conditions where a sense of safety in relationships can begin to emerge.
